Not all countries allow foreign ownership of resort properties. With the recent increase in Israeli tourism, Israelis have been buying up resort properties in foreign countries, and when they run into legal restrictions they enlist local "nominees" to front as business owners. After investigations in Thailand, this is no longer tolerated.
Three Israeli directors and business managers were arrested Friday at Hotel Arcana and Blessings Home and Café, with a fourth still at large. Five employees, including foreigners, were also detained. Raids by Immigration and Tourist Police continue across southern Thailand. (Source: Khaosod)
On Friday, Immigration Bureau police arrested or are seeking to arrest four Israeli businesspeople in Koh Phangan as part of a sweeping crackdown. The operation aims to dismantle illegal nominee businesses that skirt Thai ownership laws. Consequently, authorities warned that foreign investors can no longer use Thai proxies to control tourism companies.
